In reality, the answer is often "both" — or more accurately, "central AC for the main house, plus a mini-split for the spaces central can't reach." But let's break down when each system makes sense on its own, and when combining them is the right call.
When Central AC Is the Right Choice
Central air conditioning is still the best option for whole-home cooling when:
- You're cooling the entire house — Central AC is designed to condition 1,500–4,000+ sq ft through a duct system. For whole-home comfort, it's more efficient and cost-effective than installing mini-splits in every room.
- Your ductwork is in good shape — If the existing ducts are properly sized, sealed, and insulated, central AC delivers even temperatures throughout the house with one thermostat.
- You're replacing an existing central system — If you already have ductwork and a furnace, replacing the AC condenser and coil is straightforward and typically costs less than converting to a ductless system.
- You want simplicity — One thermostat, one system, one maintenance schedule. Central AC is familiar and straightforward for most homeowners.
For a typical 2,000–3,000 sq ft home in St. George with existing ductwork in decent condition, central AC replacement is usually the most practical and cost-effective path to whole-home comfort.
When a Mini-Split Wins
